MUMBAI: The government of New South Wales, Australia, recently announced a grant of $110,000 AUS for AURED centre in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai. The voluntary organization raises resources to provide costly cochlear implants to children who are deaf or hard of hearing and runs rehabilitation programs for them as well.
This grant will support the Aural Education for the Hearing Impaired (AURED) centre with funding for 10 children who will receive hearing implants from a Sydney-based firm. Each implant and associated therapy will cost about $11,000 AUS.
Andrew Stoner, deputy premier of New South Wales, was touched by his interaction with the children. A government spokesperson said there has been a substantial rise in the number of children with hearing disabilities in India. Although different projects are undertaken for the cause, they cannot match the scale of the problem. So these children could use all the help that is available. The New South Wales government has been working aggressively to provide aid and support to such children in India. It has arranged for a private company named Cochlear to tie up with AURED to provide hearing implants to its members. With the help of these implants and associated therapy, these children will be able to hear and therefore also speak for the very first time in their lives.
