Hearing Aid Bank
Deaf children with profound hearing loss are often recommended a cochlear implant. Prior to
implantation, the child has to undergo training in learning to listen with whatever residual hearing she/he may have, with the help of hearing aids. This training could extend up to 6
months, sometimes longer if the parents have not been able to collect sufficient funds for the implant. AURED has its own hearing aid bank and loans hearing aid to these children so that they do not have the additional expense of buying them.
Hearing aids for the bank have to be amongst the top end so that a child has every opportunity to maximize her/his hearing for two reasons.
- To determine that the child actually needs an implant.
- To prepare a child to ‘listen’ prior to the implant, so that the brain learns to process sound.
